Bangladeshi team finishes fourth at global student drone competition

DHAKA, Sept 21 — A team from United International University (UIU) in Bangladesh finished fourth at the 2026 Student Unmanned Aerial Systems (SUAS) competition in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in its first participation in the international event.UIU’s Aerial Robotics Team (UART) competed in the final round from Sept. 14 to 17 at Skyway Range in Tulsa, where 58 teams ultimately conducted flights after 81 teams took part in the preliminary round.

The competition, organised annually since 2003, brought together teams from universities and higher education institutions from several countries. Cornell University, Monash University, The Ohio State University, the University of Maryland and Warsaw University of Technology were among the participating institutions. The teams faced difficult weather conditions, including high winds and high temperatures. Twenty-one teams experienced crashes during flight operations, according to UIU.

UART completed its mission by making real-time technical and strategic adjustments during the competition. The team received full marks in the Safety Inspection and Rapid Response categories and was the only team to complete its mission fully autonomously, UIU said.

The competition's preliminary round involved 81 teams, of which 67 qualified for the final flying competition. Sixty-four teams received flight-readiness approval before 58 teams proceeded with their flights.UART's autonomous unmanned aerial vehicle was developed through research, system design, engineering, construction, testing and repeated refinement. Its capabilities include autonomous navigation, aerial mapping, object detection, payload delivery, obstacle detection and avoidance, and multiple safety mechanisms.

The fourth-place finish marks the first time a Bangladeshi team has secured a podium position at the SUAS competition, according to UIU.The result highlights the growing participation of Bangladeshi university teams in international engineering and robotics competitions and comes as universities in the country expand work in autonomous systems and aerial robotics.
